Meet Tess.
The year was 2000, the place Grand Rapids, MI: my guidance counselor tells me not to enroll in beauty school. So I did what any good 16 year old teenage rebel would do and drove my Chevy Lumina straight up to the technical school to enroll ASAP. I quickly realized hairdressers were my people and doing hair was my thing! I’m forever grateful for the path that defiant choice set me on.
After graduation I spent the next 10 years in East Lansing, MI focusing on haircutting exclusively. My strengths are creating shapes and fringes that frame & flatter your one-of-a kind beauty as well as embracing your natural texture. I’ll work with you to create a routine of in-salon and at home treatments that fit your lifestyle and helps your unique canvas of hair feel happy and healthy as can be.
When I met my hubby Joe, at a music fest in 2009 we relocated to Ferndale, MI. Shortly after, I began my journey as an educator traveling to salons around the midwest to share my love for cruelty-free products and the craft of hairdressing. Calling Metro-Detroit home inspired me to expand my service offerings to include hair color where I found passion for funky color blocks, damage free glazes, & lived-in blonde-ing.
Amidst the global corona virus pandemic of 2020 I joined the warm, welcoming and inclusive team at Mint Hair Crafting. We are proudly on the Strands for Trans map. My chair is a no-judgement zone welcome to all races, textures, sizes, sexualities & gender identities. You’ll find my energy calm and personality down to earth. You will feel heard and supported in looking and feeling your best.
During our time together you can dish on your fave thrifting spots + vintage stores, what documentaries you’re watching & show me all the cute pics of your furry children. I’ll share my best foodie recommendations, locations of street art murals that inspire me, and what’s bumping on my playlist (hint it’s usually funk, soul, house & 90s hip hop... well lets get real Missy Elliott, Sade, Janet & Erykah are my queens). I love creating a bright and relaxing space for you to relax, unwind, feel beautiful and comfortable in your own skin.
